Lynn was in Avoca, Belfast, today and one of the girls gave her a free copy of Toni Morrison's Beloved as part of the inaugural World Book Night's one million book giveaway. 20,000 volunteers are giving away 48 of their favourite books each (from a list of 25 specially printed titles), and organisers are handing out another 40,000.
I caught some of Andrew Graham-Dixon's programme on BBC2, where he explained the event, interviewed givers and authors and said, along with much else that made sense, that 'books are a powerful way of escaping the enclosure of our existence'.
