Joe Frazier

'Smokin' Joe Frazier in training in 1971
By all acounts Joe Frazier, who died today, was a sensitive and generous-minded person outside the ring. Inside it, his relentlessness inspired fear among his boxing peers, even those who beat him; and of course there were only two – Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Foreman was interviewed for BBC News tonight and he said (I think I'm quoting word for word), 'When I got in the ring I was frightened. I was hoping I'd never have to fight him, but I did...' On the night, he kept knocking Frazier down, and Frazier kept getting up again. 'I knocked him down six times, and the fight was over but he got up again and he was looking for me. What a tough man.'
