Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Parker, 1893-1967
The girl from yesterday's post, who told Calvin 'Silent Cal' Coolidge at the dinner table that she had taken a bet she could get more than three words out of him, and to whom Coolidge said simply, 'You lose', was the poet and satirist Dorothy Parker. The story is sometimes reported as apocryphal, but when you consider that Parker's response to news of the former president's death in 1933 was, 'How can you tell?', it has a ring of truth..

I enjoy Dorothy Parker's wit and wisdom I must say, so I might return to it now and then. A literary example:-

'This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.'
