A street in Minnesota

This is Sauk Centre, Minnesota, the inspiration (in part) for one contender for the Great American Novel. I know you're way ahead of me on the title of the novel and its author, but what I want to say about it is that it was begun in 1916 and took four years to write, and this gives me great cause for hope: if Sinclair Lewis can take his time, anyone can. Even better, based on past performance the best that Lewis could hope for in sales was 25,000 copies, and within three years Main Street had racked up two million.

Sauk Centre was - still is - a small and unassuming prairie town. It has few claims to fame, but one is that Sinclair Lewis was born here on this day in 1885.
