In 1985, when Paul Brady wrote The Island, his powerful, poignant and perennially relevant lament for strife-torn hotspots everywhere but particularly his native Northern Ireland, the island he had in mind, as far as I know, was Cape Breton Island (above), off Nova Scotia. The song has been covered by others, but no-one does it better than Brady himself:-
