Swan Lough

Loading the boat first thing this morning, I saw this lot out of the corner of my eye, entering Ringhaddy Sound in stately procession from the South. They were making for a tidal inlet directly across from the cabin, so I went back for my camera and snuck over to the far shore, using the moored yachts as cover so that by the time they spotted the dinghy, I was more or less beside them. I cut the outboard, waited for them to settle and snapped away, heedless of time (and very late). I love these moments.

There are several names for a gathering of swans, but for me it's not a herd, a bevvy or a wedge (all of which are correct); it's a lamentation.
